Nursing Programs in B.C.

All programs are very competitive. Nonacademic prerequisites usually include volunteering, First Aid certificate, CPR certificate, immunization record, criminal record check, TB test, Casper Test etc.

Preference will be given to applicants with: Academic grades above the minimum and related experience. Grades and percentages posted below are a minimum.

Your LPN (Licensed Practical Nursing Program) is another option for admissions to get into the Nursing programs.

Most do not offer spots to international students.

BCIT:  There is no directly entry from high school. Preference will be given to applicants with: Cumulative post-secondary GPA of 3.0 or higher, Related work experience (e.g. health care employment), Additional post-secondary academic courses. Also meet the Entrance requirements: English, Pre-Calculus 11 (73%) or 12 (67%) or Foundations of Math 11 (73%) and 12 (73%), Chemistry 11, and Academic Foundations: 18.0 post-secondary credits with a minimum of 67% in each of the following courses:

Coast Mountain College: Application deadline is: March 31.(recommended to apply early) After completing two years of students then transfer to UNBC. UNBC requirements with a minimum average of 70%. One of Foundations of Math 11, Pre-Calculus 11, Chemistry 11 and Biology 12 (73%)

Camosun College –Application deadline is December 15 (Partnership with UVIC). English 12 (73%), One of Foundations of Math 11 or Pre-Calc 11 (73%) and Chemistry 11 and Chemistry 12 (73%), and Biology 11 and 12 (73%) and one approved academic course.

College of New Caledonia: Deadline Date: March 31, English 12 (70%), Foundations or Pre-Calc Math 11 (70%), Chemistry 11 (70%), and Biology 12 (73%) and UNBC admission requirements. Campuses in Prince George and Quesnel. 

College of the Rockies – Deadline to apply: February 15. Chem 11 (70%), Biology 12 (70%), English 12 (70%), Math 11 or 12 (70%). Student intake is 32 per year.

Douglas College –October 3 at 9:00 a.m. and usually closes that day.  Those who are applying to this program directly from high school will not receive application decisions until the summer of 2023 when high school grades become available. 

Grade 12 students must apply to the Academic Foundations for Potential Nursing first. No direct entry into the Nursing program. The Academic Foundations for Potential Nursing requires: English 12 B or better, Biology 11 or 12 or Anatomy & Physiology 12 with a B or better and Foundations or Pre-Calc of Math 11 or 12 B or better. 1st qualified first admitted. Usually, it takes two years between taking the Academic Foundations for Potential Nursing and getting into the Nursing program. There is no waitlist. If you do not get in you will need to keep reapplying. For 2022 there was 177 applications from high school students and 50 students got in. 28% were from high school. 

Kwantlen Polytechnic University:  To apply to the Nursing program, you will need post-secondary courses in: BIOL 1160 with a minimum grade of C+, BIOL 1260 , ENGL 1100 , MATH 1115, 18 credits of undergraduate-level courses with a minimum grade of C+ from any of: ANTH (Anthropology), HEAL 1100, HEAL 1150, HEAL 1180, HSCI (Health Science), PHIL (Philosophy), PSYC (Psychology), SOCI (Sociology)

Langara College: Deadline to apply: January 31. High school students must apply to the Citation in Foundation for Health Studies which includes First year post-secondary courses in Biology, Stat, Psyc and English. No direct entry into Nursing from high school. Biology 11 or 12 (C), English 12 (80%), Foundations Math 11 or 12 or Pre-Calc 11 or 12 (C)

North Island College – Applications open October 3 and close on December 16. First applied, first qualified are invited to apply. (Partnership with Vancouver Island University) English 12 (C+), One of Foundations or Pre-Calc of Math 11 (C+) or Foundations of Math 12 (C+) or Pre-Calc 11 (C+) or Foundations of Math 12 (C+), Biology 12 (C+), Chemistry 11 (C+)

Northern Lights College – Associate of Arts – Health Science: Recommended students apply at least six months before program. (Pre UNBC Program). Foundations or Pre-Calc Math 11 )C+), Biology or anatomy and Physiology 12 (B), and Chemistry 11 (B). Chemistry 12 is strongly recommended. 3 intakes. September intake preferred. 36 seats. 

Okanagan College: Deadline to apply: January 15th (partnership with UBC O). English 12 (70%), Two intakes. January intake is less competitive.  One of Foundations of Math 11 or Pre-Calc 11 or Foundations of Math 12, (50%) Biology 11 and 12 (67%), and Chemistry 11 and 12, one other approved subject (67%). They received 400 applications last year. 

Selkirk College: Application deadline: December 16, English 12 (B), Biology 12 (73%), Chemistry 11 (67%) and Foundation 12 or Pre-calc Math 11 (67%). Usual average is 85%. 32 seats per year and usually 2 to 3 high school students get accepted. 

Thompson Rivers University – Deadline to apply: January 31s. English 12 (73%), Foundations of Math 12 or Pre-Calc 12 (73%) and Chemistry 11 (73%) and Biology 12 (73%) and one additional 11 or 12 Science course (73%). There were 400 applications last year to fill 80 seats. Highschool students that got in the first year had a 95% average. 

Trinity Western University – Deadline to apply: February 28.  English 12 (C+), Pre-Calc 11 or Foundations, Biology 12 or Anatomy & Physiology , Chemistry 12.  B- average in all courses. Application is free. 1/2 the seats available go to Trinity Western University students. 200 to 300 applications every year and there are 60 seats. They are looking at an A average. 

University of British Columbia – Vancouver Campus. Third year entry only.

University of British Columbia – Okanagan Campus – Deadline to apply: January 15. English 12, Biology 11 and 12, Chemistry 11 and12.  Pre-Calc 11 or Foundations of Math 12

University of the Fraser Valley – Deadline to apply: Jan 31.  English 12, Pre-Calc or Foundations 11, Biology or Anatomy & Physiology 12 and Chemistry 11. 30 hours of volunteering in a healthcare setting. Ideally 3 A’s and 1 B to be competitive. Mandatory Info session is by invitation only after applying.

University of Northern British Columbia – Deadline to apply: March 31 (In collaboration with College of new Caledonia and Coast Mountain College) Deadline to apply: March 31st. Foundations or Pre-Calc 11, Chemistry 11 and Biology 12 (73%). Looking for at least a B average. 

University of Victoria: Third year entry only with at least a 3.0 (C+) grade point average. Looking at 90% average to get into program. This program is for students continuing from College partner site Aurora College, Camosun College, College of the Rockies and Selkirk College.

Vancouver Community College: You will need post-secondary course in (Pathway to Health Sciences) English, Biology, Psychology, Anthropology and Physiology first before applying into the Nursing program. To apply to the following you will need: English 12 (C+), Chemistry 11, Biology 12, Foundations of Math 11 or Pre-Calc 11 or Foundations of Math 12.

Vancouver Island University – Deadline to apply: January 31There are 72 seats per year and usually 10 students from high school are admitted.  English 12(C+), Biology 12(C+), Chem 11 (C+), Foundations or Pre-Calc Math 11 or 12 (C+)
